A comparative study of farm nutrient budgets and nutrients flows of certified organic and non-organic farms in China, Brazil and Egypt Organic Eprints
Oelofse, Myles; Høgh-Jensen, Henning; de Abreu, L.S.; de Almeira, G.F.; Hui, Q.Y.; de Neergaard, Andreas.
Increased demand for certified organic products has led to an increase in the number of certified organic farms in developing countries. Knowledge of farmer nutrient management practices on certified organic farms in developing countries is limited. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the impact of the adoption of certified organic agriculture on farm nutrient flows and nutrient budgets, and evaluate to which degree organic farms comply with organic principles relating to nutrient management. The study is based on five case studies of different types of certified organic farming systems in Brazil, Egypt and China. Farm nutrient flows and nutrient budgets for nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium were created for each farm. Four of the five...

A Comparative Synthesis of 20th Century Agricultural Cooperative Movements in Europe AgEcon
Morales Gutierrez, A. Carlos.
To ignore the historical perspective of socio-economical phenomena while looking ahead to the future in an attempt to raise expectations and set new challenges, can prove a risky move when approaching the cooperative movement as a whole. This is particularly so in the case of the European agricultural cooperatives. We expect them to play a relevant role in the overall panorama of a globalized world. The aim of this article is to trace the origins of the agricultural cooperative movement in seven European countries (Belgium, Denmark, France, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal and the United Kingdom) and discuss the coincidences and differences which account for common problems with a view to avoiding them in future joint ventures. Some issues discussed here...

A Comparison of Actual and Hypothetical Willingness to Pay of Parents and Non-Parents for Protecting Infant Health: The Case of Nitrates in Drinking Water AgEcon
Loomis, John B.; Bell, Paul; Cooney, Helen; Asmus, Cheryl.
We estimate adults’ willingness to pay (WTP) to reduce health risks to their own or other families’ infants to test for altruism. A conjoint analysis of adults paying for bottled water found marginal WTP for reduction in risk of shock, brain damage, and mortality in the cash treatment of $2, $3.70, and $9.43, respectively. In the hypothetical market these amounts were $14, $26, and $66, indicating substantial hypothetical bias, although not unexpected due to the topic of infant health. Statistical tests confirm a high degree of altruism in our WTP results, and altruism held even when real money was involved.

A Comparison of Auction and Choice Experiment: An Application to Consumer Willingness to Pay for Rice with Improved Storage Management AgEcon
Su, Lianfan; Adam, Brian D.; Lusk, Jayson L.; Arthur, Frank.
Experimental auction and discrete choice experiment are two popular value elicitation methods. Theoretically they should yield the same results but empirical results have been mixed (e.g., Lusk and Schroeder 2004, 2006; Corrigan et al. 2010.) This study uses both methods to determine consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for rice with improved insect control and for rice stored using Integrated Pest Management (IPM). This study investigates two potential reasons – anchoring and information – for why some studies have found apparent inconsistencies between auction and choice experiment results. Results indicate that consumers’ WTP derived in the auction and choice experiments are significantly different. Consumers’ average...

A Comparison of Household Food Security in Canada and the United States AgEcon
Nord, Mark; Hopwood, Heather.
Food security—consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life—is essential for health and good nutrition. The extent to which a nation’s population achieves food security is an indication of its material and social well-being. Differences in the prevalence of household level food insecurity between Canada and the United States are described at the national level and for selected economic and demographic subpopulations. Associations of food security with economic and demographic characteristics are examined in multivariate analyses that hold other characteristics constant. Comparable measures of household food security were calculated from the nationally representative Canadian Community Health Survey Cycle 2.2 (2004) and the U.S. Current...

A Comparison of Methodologies for Valuing Decreased Health Effects from Wildfire Smoke AgEcon
Richardson, Leslie; Loomis, John B.; Champ, Patricia A..
Wildfire seasons are becoming longer and more intense throughout the world, making it increasingly important to monetize the full damages caused by wildfires when analyzing various fire management policies. We estimate the economic costs of the health effects associated with exposure to wildfire smoke using a simple cost of illness approach and for the first time to our knowledge we estimate willingness-to-pay (WTP) for a decrease in symptom days from wildfire smoke using the contingent valuation method and the averting behavior method. Comparing estimates across all three common approaches for estimating the economic cost of exposure to an air pollutant is an important contribution to the literature. This study uses data from the largest wildfire in Los...

A Comparison of Parametric Approximation Techniques to Continuous-Time Stochastic Dynamic Programming Problems AgEcon
Kompas, Tom; Chu, Long.
We compare three parametric techniques to approximate Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations via unidimensional and multidimensional problems. The linear programming technique is very efficient for unidimensional problems and offers a balance of speed and accuracy for multidimensional problems. A comparable projection technique is shown to be slow, but has stable accuracy, whereas a perturbation technique has the least accuracy although its speed suffers least from the curse of dimensionality. The linear programming technique is also shown to be suitable for problems in resource management, including applications to biosecurity and marine reserve design.

A comparison of the economic and environmental performances of conventional and organic farming: evidence from financial statements AgEcon
Argiles, Josep M.; Brown, Nestor Duch.
While conventional farming systems face serious problems of sustainability, organic agriculture is seen as a more environmentally friendly system since it favours renewable resources, recycles nutrients, uses the environment’s own systems for controlling pests and diseases, sustains ecosystems, protects soils, and reduces pollution. At the same time organic farming promotes animal welfare, the use of natural foodstuffs, product diversity and the avoidance of waste, among other practices. However, the future of organic agriculture will depend on its economic viability and on the determination shown by governments to protect these practices. This paper performs panel regressions with a sample of Catalan farms (Spain) to test the influence of organic farming...

A comparison of the effects of physical and chemical mutagens in sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Begum,Tamina; Dasgupta,Tapash.
Three sesame genotypes (Rama, SI 1666 and IC 21706) were treated with physical (γ-rays: 200 Gy, 400 Gy or 600 Gy) or chemical (ethyl methane sulphonate, EMS: 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% or 2.0%) mutagens and their mutagenic effectiveness and efficiency were estimated in the M2 generation. The M3 generation was used to identify the most effective mutagen and dose for induction of mutations. The average effectiveness of EMS was much higher than γ-rays. The lowest dose of γ-rays (200 Gy) and the lowest concentration of EMS (0.5%) showed the highest mutagenic efficiency in all genotypes. Analysis of the M3 generation data based on parameters such as the variance ratio and the difference in residual variances derived from the model of Montalván and Ando indicated that...

A compilation of Europe-wide databases from published measurements of PCBs, Dioxins and Furans ArchiMer
Institute for Environment and Sustainability (Joint Research Centre).
Chemical risk assessment always entails an evaluation of expected environmental concentrations of substances; these concentrations may be predicted using mathematical models or may be chosen on the basis of experimental observations and monitoring activities. The work discusses the usefulness and limitations in building compilations of published monitoring data by describing a feasibility study on polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polychlorinated dibenzo-pdioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), for which observed concentration data were retrieved from scientific journal articles published between 2000 and 2009. These chemicals are typical POPs and are of constantly high concern for their potential adverse effects on human health and ecosystems. PCBs were...

A complementary strategy for the conservation of native forest tree species: retrieval and conservation of threatened ecotypes PFB - Pesquisa Florestal Brasileira
Shimizu, Jarbas Yukio.
Deforestation has become rampant in recent years in Brazil and has affected all biomes where manyspecies are threatened to extinction due to destruction natural habitats. Government initiatives to hinder thechain of destruction include two main lines of action: to establish conservation units (parks, reserves andothers); and programs to encourage plantation of native tree species for reclamation of degraded ecosystems, restoration of forests on permanent protection areas (riparian, and steep slope environments), and establishment of “legal reserves” (a mandatory forest reserve on at least 20% of the land area). Conservation units are effectivein conserving natural ecosystems. However, they are of limited value for the conservation of ecotypes, sincetheir...

A confiança entre os agricultores na garantia do atributo ecológico de sua produção. Organic Eprints
Fornazier, Armando; Pedrozo, Eugenio Avila.

Organic Eprints
Campos, Jurema Iara; Valente, Ana Lúcia Eduardo Farah.
